SOUL, COURAGE, AND RHYTHM
SCR Dance began as free salsa lessons
taught by Joanna Berryman after school twice a week. She wanted high school students to learn to express themselves
through salsa dance. Through dancing, our young adults can learn confidence and comfort with themselves and others.
Within SCR Dance, students find their own SOUL, COURAGE, and RHYTHM and how to express
it to the world!
In May 2004, SCR Dance made its debut
in the Texas Salsa Open, performing with 4 couples. They have gone on to perform in several salsa events around
Houston.
SCR Dance continued to grow.
In the 2005-2006 school year the advanced students became the teachers. SCR Dance offered free lessons taught by
our advanced company members (high school students) to beginner students at MCTC High School. Additionally, we had a student choreographer, Jesus Aguilera,
who worked in collaboration with the director to design and choreograph the routines.
Due to the closing of MCTC, the director
moved the dance company to High School for Law Enforcement and Criminal Justice and has started with a new and fresh group
of beginner students. The excitement has already begun to grow as they have already taught elementary students
and performed at the high school with a choreography by Rebecca Santiago.
